What are energy balls?

If you’ve never made energy balls before, it’s time to hop on the bandwagon! Seriously.

Energy balls are *sort of* like a granola bar, but rolled into a ball. They are often made with dates or some other type of dried fruit and some type of nuts, seeds, grains (like oats) and flavouring.

I’m a big fan of making energy balls on meal prep days because this little snack is a SAVIOUR for that 3 pm afternoon slump. Not to mention energy balls are super easy to make and usually require either just a bowl or a food processor to mix everything together.

Once you finish up with this recipe be sure to check out some of my other favourite energy ball recipes from the blog: salted caramel coconut bliss balls, peanut butter and jelly energy balls and chocolate macaroon energy balls!

How to make Carrot Cake Energy Balls:

Another thing I love about making energy balls is that they are SO easy to make! They are no-bake (can I get an amen!), and usually only require either just a bowl or a food processor. In the case of this recipe, we’re going to be using a food processor since we need to process the dates. The whole process can pretty much be broken down into 3 steps:

  1. Puree the ingredients together
  2. Roll into balls
  3. Roll in shredded coconut

and…you’re done!

How easy was that?

A few notes on the recipe:

This recipe calls for Medjool dates, which tend to be stickier than regular dates. If you’d like to use regular dates to make this recipe and your dates feel a bit dry, I’d recommend soaking them in hot water for 5 minutes, draining and then proceed with the recipe. (This will add some moisture back into the dates and help all the ingredients bind together!)

If you don’t like walnuts, you can pretty much substitute them for any other type of nuts you like, or even oats if you want to avoid nuts entirely!

You can also add in any extra ingredients you love to this versatile recipe. Dried fruits, chocolate chips, cocoa powder…whatever you like!

Can I use a mixture of half raisins, cranberry instead of all dates?

    • Carrot Cake Energy Balls (17)

      Jess Reply

Hi Yoided, I’d recommend to use dates as they tend to be “stickier” than raisins for cranberries, so they will help the energy balls bind together. If you are using raisins, make sure they are fresh, or soak them in hot water for 5 minutes and drain them before using them. This will help make them stickier and so you can roll the dough into balls!
